It was possibly back in August last year at Race the Train when I said to Simon that there would be no way I would be ever doing a Marathon again!
Said that to the wrong person did’nt I !
From then on the question was always raised until I succumbed to the pressure and gave in and entered the Leicester Marathon, this was not done before consulting my wife Julie (Oh yes it was I here some of you say) . I had a quite word with Dave Masser about the training and this was how it went:
Me: I am thinking of doing the Leicester Marathon,
Dave: Ok
Me: Can I get the training done in 13 weeks,
Dave: No problem I will sort out a program
Me: Ok
(Tuesday Night up the club)
Dave: I think what we need to do Is up your mileage and have assumed you are doing 30miles a week so we should be ok
Me: Eer! Not even 20miles only on a good week
Dave: Aah! That could be a problem
Me: Don’t panic I will ramp it up and we will see how it goes! La la la la la la !!! (Am I stupid or what!)
Needless to say I did ramp up my training to which I one week I achieved 56miles to which Dave said to slow down a little. I was getting great help and encouragement from Simon, John Padbury & Dave and was having good runs out with Seth, things couldn’t have been better my times were falling in races and Silver time standards were flying in. The just before this years Race the Train I picked up a virus that knocked me for six, the weekend before the Train race I picked this thing up and treated it as a cold (Beachams-Lemsip-Pills) you name it I was taking it so that I would not his the Train race and mess up my training. Well I went over to the Joy Cann 5 mile league race and ran like a Looney Tune (Meep! Meep!) 33 minutes my best ever, and no it was not a result of all the potions I had been taking (well ok maybe!).
Anyway that night and the next day the Virus kicked in (Bloody Hell! Man Flu that’s nothing!) I said I would go to Wales with the other’s and if I could run then I would, and I did but that’s just me anyway. Then comes the best bit!
At the camp fire that night Simon chirp’s up and said to me, I here you’ve entered the Leicester Marathon ( in his own loud way!)
Julie (My Wife) says “ THAT’S NEWS TO ME”
Yes Ok I had’nt told her before I entered!!
After the Train race my Marathon training progressed with a lot of help and guidance from Dave, Simon & John with run’s out and just being helpful with encouragement. Although I did get to go out with John & Dave early one Sunday morning around 7am and remember Dave commenting on how much I talk whilst running and then pointed out that the next hill may put a stop to that.
At the top of that said hill Dave say’s “Don’t you ever shut up” all the way up the hill Yak! yak! yak!!
I really enjoyed this 20 mile run and it gave me a great boost for the Marathon.
One week later I jarred my back (B*gger!) that’s 2 weeks until Leicester.
Anyway as you all know I did manage to complete the Marathon.
This was a very very very emotional target for me the distance I said I would never do again and yes it has given me a big big boost to know that I can still do that sort of thing. I have had pass history with doing a run like this many many years ago so its with great pleasure that I thank all at the club for the help with getting run’s in but a big big thank’s goes to Simon, Dave & John for giving me that belief in being able to achieve my best run this year CHEER’S GUY’S!!
And the Biggest thanks goes to Julie who at the 21 mile mark I had to stop and give a cuddle to because she was in tears through fear that it may be too much for me!
To be honest I don’t do emotion very well so again THANKS GUY’S!
