Woodlands Half
Just thought I would write a few words about the Woodlands Half Marathon, 30 May 2010. I am not sure if anybody has run this race before, but it was full on cross country set within the beautiful landscape of Bourne Woods. 2.5 laps of paths and tracks over undulating terrain in open countryside and dappled shade. Some, from the club, thought Bourne was quite far, but the drive over was shorter and simpler than getting to Grace Dieu in late Jan this year, you may recall Steve’s article about this.
I am trying to remember and quantify the terrain as this is quite often the first question asked. In my extensive experience, a formidable one other half marathon, I would like to say similar to Gated Road. However, at Gated road, I was only semi conscious but alive enough to refuse resuscitation from Andy Lauder as he clearly had not shaved for a few days. Getting back the Woodlands, the terrain was overall comparable to the other XC’s without the stupid hill sections – lots of long gradients. It was a pleasurable experience to run for 13 miles without seeing a single vehicle and occasional evidence of equine activity on the path. However, at one point, I did mistake the aroma from a patch of wild garlic for flatulence from the bloke in font (this proved great motivation for a burst of speed).
In all, a well organised event in a great location and would recommend anybody give it a try. Goodies: a t-shirt and medal.
