A night of celebration for Hinckley Running club!

Members of Hinckley Running Club celebrated a successful season by attending the Leicestershire Road Running League’s (LRRL) annual presentation on Friday, October 7th.

Hinckley runners celebrating the LRRL 2016
Hinckley runners with their LRRL 2016 awards

The event, held at Leicestershire County Cricket Club gives runners who have participated in the league the opportunity to get together and collect any trophies achieved first hand.

Both the Hinckley Men’s and Ladies Senior teams finished the summer season strongly with second place in Division 1. As the scores of the 8 top performing males and 4 top performing females are counted in each race, the top scoring 8 males and 4 females of the season will receive a trophy for their performances.

Individual trophies for the LRRL Summer League Championships were achieved by Bethan Padbury for finishing first in the Under 20 Women’s category, Penny Masser for third in the VET50 Women’s category, Kate Perkins for fifth in the Senior Women’s category and Rebecca Gould for sixth in the Senior Women’s category.

A special mention was given to Kirsty Pollard, who was nominated for the Norman Kershaw award for being an inspiration to others after continuing to support the Hinckley All Sorts beginner and intermediate groups as soon as possible after returning home from a period in intensive care with swine flu and double pneumonia. Kirsty also made an inspirational comeback to the club as soon as she was given the all clear to run again.

Hinckley Running Club meet at Hinckley Leisure Centre on Tuesday and Thursday Evenings at 6:15pm. The All Sorts Beginners and Intermediate groups meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm. For further information visit www.hinckleyrunningclub.com

LRRL TEAM SCORING SYSTEM – RULES

Men
For each club, the top 8 men score for the “A” team in a race. Points for the race are awarded in line with their finishing position.
E.g. if the top 8 men finish 3, 12, 26, 42, 55, 67, 89, 103 then in total 397 points are scored.

The scorers can be from any category – eg U20, Sen, V40, V50 etc.

The next 8 men will score for the club’s “B” team.
Teams are not picked, so it is possible for a man to score for the club’s “B” team in one race, and the “A” team in the next.

All of the team’s points are added up, and the lower the team score, the higher you finish on the day overall.
E.g. – a team score of 150 points is a better score than a team score of 250 points!

The teams are then sorted into their respective divisions to score accordingly for league points.

The league points are awarded as follows:-
Leagues with < 10 teams – 20, 17, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11 etc Leagues with > 10 teams – 25, 22, 20, 19, 18, 17, 16 etc

So if West End score 250 points in one race, and finish 3rd in Division 2 (with 8 teams), they will score 15 league points.

The teams competition is not split into Winter/Summer league, so the scores across the whole season count.
Two teams are promoted and relegated from each “A” league.

The “B” league is one big division, which is due to be split into Divisions 1, 2 and 3 for 2017, so watch this space!

Vet Men
For each club, the top 4 vet men score for the “A” team in a race. Points for the race are awarded in line with their finishing position.
E.g. if the top 4 vet men finish 3, 12, 26, 42 then in total 83 points are scored.

The scorers can be from category V40 + only.

The next 4 vet men will score for the club’s “B” team.
Teams are not picked, so it is possible for a vet man to score for the club’s “B” team in one race, and the “A” team in the next.

All of the team’s points are added up, and the lower the team score, the higher you finish on the day overall.
E.g. – a team score of 150 points is a better score than a team score of 250 points!

Ladies
For each club, the top 4 ladies score for the “A” team in a race. Points for the race are awarded in line with their finishing position.
E.g. if the top 4 ladies finish 3, 12, 26, 42 then in total 83 points are scored.

The scorers can be from any ladies category – eg U20, Sen, V40, V50 etc.

The next 4 ladies will score for the club’s “B” team.
Teams are not picked, so it is possible for a lady to score for the club’s “B” team in one race, and the “A” team in the next.

All of the team’s points are added up, and the lower the team score, the higher you finish on the day overall.
Eg – a team score of 150 points is a better score than a team score of 250 points!

Two teams are promoted and relegated from each “A” league.

The “B” leagues have been split for 2016 (they used to be in the same system as “A” teams) but we are waiting for confirmation
on how the league are working it exactly. For now we have made them as one big division just to give people an idea on
which clubs have the most strength in depth.

Vet Ladies
For each club, the top 3 vet ladies score for the “A” team in a race. Points for the race are awarded in line with their finishing position.
E.g. if the top 3 ladies finish 3, 12, 26 then in total 41 points are scored.

The scorers can be from category V40 + only.

The next 3 vet ladies will score for the club’s “B” team.
Teams are not picked, so it is possible for a vet lady to score for the club’s “B” team in one race, and the “A” team in the next.

All of the team’s points are added up, and the lower the team score, the higher you finish on the day overall.

Thursday 11th August 2016 routes

This week we are running route S08, the long route is 9 miles and follows the canal to Dadlington before heading back to Hinckley along Stoke Rd.

To reduce this to 7 miles ( rather than following ‘S08 short’ ) you should leave the canal towpath at Stoke Golding (to omit the Dadlington loop) then follow Stoke Road as per the route below.

All summer routes are now available on the club website. See the ‘Thursday Evening Routes’ tab under the Training menu or use this link:

Hungarton 7

On July 6th 2016, 29 HRC runners (14 men and 15 ladies)  took part in Hungarton 7. It was much cooler than last year  and much appreciated by all the runners . No doubt it helped to achieve lots of PBs and course bests! Everyone welcomed the fast downhill finish once the relentless hills were over. Good support and pictures from Ian Sylvester.  He was a welcome sight, signalling the end couldn’t be far now, could it?

Chris Limmer was the first back, very closely followed (3 seconds) by Matt Johnson and then Simon Birch was 3rd and Chris Langham  4th back for Hinckley. The mens team finished 2nd in division 1 for this race. Great to see Matthew Lunn out too, we hope to see him at Joy Cann 5.

After a heated Langham show down (there was money up for grabs too!),Harry put in a great effort and smashed his PB finishing in 51:22. He also wins the male Runner of the Day prize! Well done to Harry and all the Langhams, always great to see any of them out running. We had other great family duos: Ben Masser crossing the line at 46:03 and Penny Masser at 53:39, six minutes faster than last year and achieving a diamond standard time at the same time!  We also saw Faye Hudson finishing in 1:02:46 and Julie Hudson in 1:12:00.

First over the line for the ladies was Bethan Padbury in 50:07, closely followed by Kate Perkins in 50:42, Rebecca Gould in 51:17 and Céline Guéry in 52:57.  According to our own calculations this allowed the ladies to finish 1st in division 1 for this race and 2nd overall behind Team Anstey. Fantastic result!

As far as PBs go, Sarah Garford sliced two minutes and twenty-two seconds off her time compared to 2015, Julia Waite and Jenny Green three minutes off their time and Elizabeth Lees and Céline Guéry both sliced an impressive six minutes off their time compared to last year. Well done all!

Julie Hudson was awarded Female Runner of the day for her contagious enthusiasm and bags of energy before, during and after the race. Julie achieved a bronze standard time at Hungarton 7 and was also celebrating her birthday on raceday! Well done Julie and thank you for the cake!

This week we are running route S17, out to Stoney Stanton. I’d take some drinks along as the forecast is to be hot. For those at Thunder Run this weekend, will see you there.

Routes for Thursday 14th July 2016

This week we are running route S16, this features the canal and a bit across a field. I hope it isn’t too bad underfoot in those sections, but you never know with this British weather, not long sections and should be ok.

Swithland 6

Birstall Runners’ Swithland 6 league race generated a near record breaking turnout from the Hinckley crew with 39 taking part with a special mention for our U20 Bethan Padbury, Ben Masser and Harry Langham who are not letting the busy GCSE/ AS level exams stopping them from racing! We wonder what it can be about these chip-timed, flat, picturesque, standard-distance, official-measured, goody-bag-offering, summer road races (with toilet facilities) that make them so much more popular than the winter cross-country series? Alas, this remains a mystery.

It was Simon Birch’s turn this week to lead the line for Hinckley’s men. He grabbed 11th place overall. Few saw him – he was so quick! Rumours persist that he arrives seconds before the race start and leaves his car engine running for when he gets back. Near the head of the field Rolf Hoelmer collected a silver time despite losing his pacer (Chris Limmer) to Nick Moore who benefited by running his best race yet.

Men’s runner of the day was awarded to Richard Guest who’s now regularly collecting bronze times by a good margin and showing the incredible change in form that he has achieved over the year. Well done Richard!

On the ladies’s side, we had 22 runners and for many, it was their first race of the summer league including Leanne Byard, Jane Wheeler, Erica Fisher, Liz Aspden-Mansfield, Elaine Wischhusen, Odette Foxall and Louise Berry. Also Sarah Chisnall (and her husband Phil) joined us for the very first time. There was a great atmosphere on the whole and lots of happy runners achieving PBs and standard times on the day. Penny Masser completed her fastest 6 mile race for 2 years.

The lady runner of the day was awarded to Rebecca Gould. Since joining us in road running in the summer league, Rebecca has performed consistently well. She powers through till the finish line and at Swithland 6 she was the first Hinckley lady to cross the line. Well done Rebecca!

Gaddesby 7

Gaddesby 7 is a new race in the LRRL this year, hosted by Team Anstey. Like the other races in north Leicester it will no doubt come to be described as ‘undulating’. It’s by no means flat! The steep downhill at the end is reminiscent of Hungarton’s finish but the course will be even more familiar to runners of the Leicester Round as it overlaps one of the earlier legs. 16 from the men’s division took part at the final count. Identifying everyone from the results was trickier than usual due to Gordon registering as a veteran female (well done on the silver standard time though ‘Ms Landsburgh’!), Chris Limmer hiding in the Sleaford Runners camp and everyone wondering if they should know ‘Paul Martin’ who turned out to be a misplaced West Ender.

Leading the line for Hinckley and in 13th place overall was Matt Johnson who is running brilliantly at the moment. The men’s A team was topped up by the Langhams, the Massers, Simon Earley, Nick Moore and Rolf Hoelmer who continues to enjoy his finest form. Male Runner of the Day was awarded to Ed Batch who has had some ups and downs due to injury over the last few events but he continues to give his best on every race day.

On the ladies’side we had 15 runners including mother-and-daughter Julie and Faye Hudson, and Rebecca Gould and Diane Wildbur joining us for the first time in a road league race!

Our leading lady was Kate Perkins who crossed the line in 50:02 finishing 12th lady. Rebecca Gould ran very well on her first road league race and achieved a club gold standard (but she said she still prefers cross country), next was Bethan Padbury who, nonetheless, is currently taking and revising for her GCSE exams.

Lady runner of the day goes to Diane Wildbur who ran her first road league race and that was certainly a baptism of fire. Diane’s determination and enthusiasm for running (and racing, Diane loves a medal!) has no limit. She has hardly stopped running since taking part in the London marathon  on April 24th as she undertook her “Run every day in May” challenge only a few days afterwards, including the hilly and hot Gaddesby 7 into her challenge. Well done Diane!

West End 8 – The LRRL Summer League 2016 has begun!

Sunday 15th May saw 14 Men and 12 Ladies competing in the West End 8 league race. In sunny conditions Matt Johnson led the men’s team home in just over 47 minutes, finishing 16th overall. Father-son combination Chris and Joe Langham followed and veteran Simon Earley was 4th for Hinckley with a rare PB ( his first in four years!)

Male Runner of the day goes to Rob Pratt for a great all round performance – well done Rob and thanks for a great team display by all the Hinckley runners!

On the ladies’ team Kate Perkins was the first home in 56:33, a 6-minute PB on the course and finishing 14th lady. Kate was closely followed by Bethan Padbury. The 3rd and 4th Hinckley ladies were respectively Céline Guéry and Penny Masser , who both achieved PBs for this course.

Female runner of the day goes to Jude McSharry. Jude has really thrown herself into the club life since joining, either by wearing the Hinckley vest on races or by being an enthusiastic supporter (and photographer!). On Sunday, Jude demonstrated  her great team spirit as she was a brilliant support thougout the race to fellow Hinckley runner Jacqui Campbell!

Well done all and see you at Gaddesby 7 on next Sunday!
